Letter to the OECD - ECA-Watch withdraws from consultations. This letter, press release and statement all express frustration with the consultation process at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and its Export Credit Group (ECG), to engage in substantive exchanges of views on issues raised by ECA-Watch (a watchdog group) over the years. Citing the growing and urgent credibility crisis with the Common Approaches, ECA-Watch announced that until country members are committed to a dialogue process that works, its members, including the Halifax Initiative, have elected to no longer engage in these annual meetings of the ECG with civil society.

Ottawa - The government failed today to take action to end human rights and environmental abuses committed by Canadian mining companies abroad. In Mining in Developing Countries: Corporate Social Responsibility, released today, the government dismissed recommendations proposed by the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (SCFAIT) to adopt concrete regulatory measures. Instead, it continued to rely on voluntary codes of conduct.

New agreement for financing renewable technology a Trojan horse for environmental destruction, NGOs say September 7, 2005 Brussels, Belgium - A new agreement to finance renewable energy projects could be a Trojan horse that will lead to environmental destruction rather than environmental sustainability, warns a new NGO report. NGOs say the inclusion of large dams under the agreement is a betrayal of an otherwise positive effort to promote sustainable energy technologies like wind, solar, and geothermal.

Letter to Trade Minister Peterson re EDC's Disclosure policy: This letter repeats a request asked of EDC one year ago, asking the Minister when the Crown Corporation will be reveleaing its new disclosure policy and consulting groups on this policy. As a result of the slow changes, EDC is failing to meet the demands of the Auditor General in its review of EDC, of the Treasury Board report on Crown Corps, and of internatoinal good practice. The letter makes some suggestions on how EDC might enhance current practice.

Canadian civil society groups in the Halifax Initiative Coalition expressed disappointment with G-7 Finance Ministers for failing to show the political will to bridge differences and cancel the debts of the poorest countries, but highlight that 100% debt cancellation is now universally acknowledged to be necessary for the poorest countries.

The Halifax Initiative

The Halifax Initiative is a Canadian coalition of development, environment, faith-based, human rights and labour groups.

Our goal is to fundamentally transform the international financial system and its institutions, namely the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and export credit agencies.

By doing so, we hope to achieve poverty eradication, environmental sustainability and the full realization of human rights.
