Les Nations-Unies ont désigné l’année 2012 Année internationale de l’accès à une énergie durable. L’accès à l’énergie, dont les effets sur la santé, l’égalité des sexes et les changements climatiques sont considérables, est la pierre angulaire du processus qui permet de répondre aux besoins en matière de moyens d’existence essentiels. Dans les pays du Sud, 2,7 milliards de personnes comptent sur la biomasse traditionnelle pour cuisiner. Le bois, le charbon et les résidus agricoles utilisés dans les poêles rudimentaires causent plus de 1,5 million de décès par an dus à des maladies pulmonaires chroniques et à la pneumonie infantile. La déforestation en Afrique sub-saharienne, une des sources principales d’émission de CO2, est principalement due à l’utilisation du bois pour la faire la cuisine et produire le charbon.

L’un des problèmes clés sous-jacents à la crise financière de 2008 a été le manque de transparence dans l’économie internationale. Ces dernières décennies ont vu se propager une structure financière parallèle faite de paradis fiscaux, de juridictions opaques, d’entreprises déguisées, de sociétés écrans et des simulacres de fondations, des systèmes utilisés dans la moitié de tous les mouvements de transactions commerciales et de capitaux. Comme l’opacité en est la caractéristique principale, cette économie parallèle sert au blanchiment d’argent et aux opérations d’évasion fiscale favorisant la corruption, la criminalité et le commerce par delà les frontières.
