Il y a 13 years 11 months.   Corporate accountability.   Government’s new Toothless Review Mechanism Underlines why Responsible Mining Bill C-300 is Necessary Ottawa, October 26, 2010 – One day before the third and final vote in the House of Commons on Bill C-300, the government has launched its Review Process, a dispute resolution mechanism whereby the Extractive Sector Corporate Social Responsibility Counsellor proposes to mediate between aggrieved communities and Canadian mining, oil, and gas companies. Significant deficiencies render this mechanism inadequate to resolve serious community grievances: the dispute mechanism is voluntary in nature, lacks a transparent fact-finding function and will lead to neither recommendations to government nor to sanctions. Consequently, Bill C-300 remains an important piece of legislation.   Read more ...

Il y a 14 years 3 weeks.   .   Les taxes sur les transactions financières sont possibles Le 16 juillet dernier, le Groupe de travail sur les financements innovants pour le développement, une organisation intergouvernementale rassemblant 55 États membres, a publié un rapport déclarant qu’il était possible de taxer les transactions financières. Ce rapport, commandé par 12 des 55 États membres, a été élaboré par une équipe d’experts financiers internationaux qui s’est concentrée sur les transactions des marchés des changes. Selon le rapport, étant donné que les transactions de devises entre les banques sont traitées grâce à des systèmes internationaux de haute sécurité qui encaissent des frais de transaction sur le change interbancaire, il serait relativement facile de mettre en place dans ce système une taxe sur les transactions des marchés des changes. Le rapport calcule aussi que l’introduction d’une taxe minime sur les opérations de change de 0,005 % génèrerait 33 milliards de dollars par an et pourrait servir à financer les activités de développement telles que l’élimination de la pauvreté et le développement durable.   Read more ...

The Canadian edition features an article by HI's Program Officer on Canadian mining investment in the region. The article describes recent efforts to reform domestic policy and law regarding the overseas operations of Canadian extractive companies. It focuses on current initiatives that seek to create accountability mechanisms for several government agencies that facilitate Canadian mining, oil and gas investments in the global South.
