Every day 1,400 women die of pregnancy-related causes.  Every day 24,000 children under the age of five die of what are largely preventable causes. Progress on improving child and maternal health is the furthest off-track of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) UN member states committed to in 2000. This focus gives MDGs four and five, on child and maternal health, the push they need ahead of September’s United Nations High Level Meeting and ten year review of the MDGs. But funding the initiative comes during difficult days – a global crisis and a budget deficit. Resources are tight.   Read more ...

La Recommandation du conseil sur des approches communes concernant l’environnement et les crédits à l’exportation bénéficiant d’un soutien public (Approches communes) est un gentlemen’s agreement qui vise à établir des règles du jeu équitables quant aux pratiques environnementales des OCE. Des organismes de la société civile allèguent que l’impact de cette recommandation est affaibli par l’absence de mécanismes fermes de reddition de comptes pouvant en assurer l’application uniforme et efficace par les pays membres.   Read more ...

The Recommendation on Common Approaches on the Environment and Officially Supported Export Credits (Common Approaches) is a “gentlemen’s agreement” that seeks to establish a level playing field regarding ECA environmental practice. CSOs argue that the Recommendation’s impact is undermined by the lack of effective accountability mechanisms to ensure consistent and effective application by member governments.   Read more ...

Dear Julian, Further to your letter of December 2009, you will find below the elements that ECA-Watch and Amnesty International would like to see addressed and revised in the review of the 2007 Revised Council Recommendation on Common Approaches on the Environment and Officially Supported Export Credits (Common Approaches). Il y a 14 years 9 months.   .   Les audiences sur la responsabilité des entreprises se corsent Cela a bougé ce mois-ci aux audiences parlementaires sur le projet de loi C-300, ou Loi sur la responsabilisation des sociétés à l'égard de leurs activités minières, pétrolières ou gazières dans les pays en développement (voir Mise à jour, février 2009). Ce projet de loi avait été présenté au Comité permanent des affaires étrangères et du développement international (CPAEDI) le 25 mai par le député John McKay. Ce mois-ci, les membres du Comité ont entendu le témoignage captivant de plusieurs personnes (voir LES FAITS). Parmi les témoins entendus, notons Romina Picolotti, ancienne secrétaire d’État à l’environnement de l’Argentine et récipiendaire du prestigieux Prix Sophie pour l’environnement et le développement durable; Stephen Hunt, ancien mineur et actuel directeur du Syndicat canadien des métallurgistes unis d’Amérique; Marketa Evans, la nouvelle conseillère en responsabilité sociale des entreprises nommée par le gouvernement fédéral; et les représentants des compagnies minières Barrick Gold, Goldcorp et Kinross.   Read more ...
